Aluminium window frames: the modern default
Aluminium is the material most Zimbabwean homeowners choose today. It is lightweight, does not rust, and holds its shape through Harare’s hot summers and cool winters. Aluminium frames are also very low maintenance: a wipe-down every few months is normally enough.
- Thermal performance — plain aluminium conducts heat, so without a thermal break it can feel less insulating than timber.
- Finish options — powder-coated finishes are widely available. Silver, charcoal and bronze are the most popular.
- Strength relative to steel — aluminium is strong for its weight, but a steel frame of the same profile thickness will be heavier and more rigid.
Steel window frames: heavier, tougher, traditional
Steel window frames are heavier and more rigid than aluminium. On older homes with existing steel frames, replacing like-for-like can be the simplest option because the openings were built for that profile.
- Weight — steel frames are heavy. Very large single panels become impractical.
- Corrosion — untreated steel can rust. It needs a proper primer and paint system to last.
- Maintenance — steel frames generally need repainting every few years.
